Speaker: Vivek Dave, Harting

Bio: Dr. Dave earned his undergraduate degree with Honor in Engineering and Applied Science from the California Institute of Technology, and his masters and doctorate degrees in Materials Engineering from MIT. For the past 25+ years he has worked in the areas of advanced materials and processes, advanced manufacturing, sensing and control and the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence to a wide range of industrial applications. He has successfully helped clients globally to improve their processes and productivity as part of startups, Fortune 500 multinationals, National Labs, and privately held companies. He is presently serving as the Director of Technology for HARTING Inc. of North America, the American subsidiary of a family-owned German company. In this capacity, he has been working with the MIT MTL on several projects investigating advanced sensing and data science for edge computing.

Abstract: In Process Quality Assurance (IPQA) is a quality control methodology based on the analysis of real-time, in-process characteristics and attributes as opposed to traditional quality assurance based on inspection of post-process product attributes.  The adoption Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet has provided new tools and capabilities but fundamental aspects of IPQA are often overlooked and therefore its full benefits are not always achieved.  This talk will examine the historical evolution of IPQA, its fundamental aspects as applied to advanced manufacturing, and the current state of implementation for various processes. Future trends will also be discussed with an emphasis on significant integration of capabilities in the edge computing environment.
