Microelectromechancial Systems Based on Biological and Biodegradable Materials

Mark Allen holds undergraduate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) and graduate degrees from MIT. He is a Professor of Electrical Engineering, previously at Georgia Tech and currently at Penn, with a research focus on microelectromechanical systems. He has co-founded multiple spinoff companies that have commercialized his research.

Implantable micromachined sensors enable the relaying of information from the body to guide disease treatment. This talk will describe several such devices, including permanently implanted wireless pressure sensors for monitoring patients with congestive heart failure; biodegradable RF wireless sensors for monitoring acute conditions such as wound healing; and micromachined sensors based on proteins that may allow for better integration with the body.
